Wind River Bear Institute Karelian Bear Dog Puppy Program

The Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) typically produces one litter annually and matches and places the puppies like diamonds with our unique Karelian Bear Dog (KBD) Puppy Program – a process described below. Due to our extensive work in the field to protect and rehabilitate bears, our lines are field-tested, both in terms of their ability to work with people and bears.  We breed only the best of our field team KBDs.

Annually, WRBI’s teams and our extended family of KBDs in the Partners-In-Life Program®, work to save bears by teaching both bears and people correct behaviors.  The KBDs serve as ambassadors for our education efforts and annually carry out 200 – 500 conditioning actions on  grizzly, black and polar bear actions in the US, Canada and Japan. To date we have never had a KBD or bear injured. The WRBI KBD Teams are the only teams officially used by US and Canadian wildlife agencies, private organizations and private land-users to work with grizzly bears.  KBDs we have placed with wildlife managers and publics are also helping to reduce conflicts with other species of wildlife, such as cougar, Big Horn Sheep and moose.

Our breeding lines incorporate top KBDs imported from Finland and the Arkhangelsk Region of Russia- that was once made up of a portion of Finnish Karelia.  These are the areas that provided the original breeding lines when the “Karelian Bear Dog” was created as a breed.

Becoming a Wind River Karelian Bear Dog Puppy Owner

OVERVIEW:
WRBI Pup Program
GOING HOME WITH PUP:
New Owner Orientation Program

We place our KBDs in the following roles:

  • Bear Conflict Dogs (for Bear Managers, Biologists, Officers, Wardens, Rangers, Private)
  • Bear Protection Dogs (for Biologists, Outfitters, Ranchers, Campground Managers, Private)
  • Companion Dogs (for Active People who enjoy Outdoor Activities and can provide the environment, activities and commitment needed for a healthy, happy partnership with our highly intelligent and activity-driven Karelians)
Our KBD's come to you with our Love and Early Care and Training:

  • Extensive socialization to people, including weekly exposure to children
  • Confidence building
  • Puppy field commands and obedience training using food rewards and praise
  • Testing and Assessment of Working Dogs Skills and Individual Personalities
  • Matching of KBD to Owner's work needs and personality
  • Because of the extensive socialization, field assessment, training, and new owner program to ensure accurate matching of pup to owners, the cost of the pups is $2,300, which includes a $300 starter kit that you take with you when you leave with the pup.
  • On-site orientation and bonding for new owners at the Institute

**We do allow you to pay the balance of this cost over one year.**

2011 Puppy Litter Event Schedule:
We are now accepting applications for Screening and Adoption of Wind River Karelian Bear Dog Puppies.

  • The puppies were born on November 8, 2011
  • WRBI's unique Socialization Program to adult strangers begins during the pups' 2nd week; socialization to children begins during the 3rd week - this Program is continued by the new owners after the pups leave the Home Kennel.  The results of this Program have a time-proven success, with WRBI KBDs visiting with thousands of people and kids during hundreds of presentations at schools and other functions, without any problems with confidence or socialization.
  • WRBI's unique Confidence Building Program begins during the pups' 1st week and continues through their 10th week.  The techniques are learned and carried on by the new owners for the duration of the dog's life.  Pups are handled for a minimum of 1-2 hours daily during the first 7 weeks of their lives.  This Program has provided WRBI with bold, confident, gentle KBDs that function well in almost any type of situation without any concern, and a higher than average success rate for KBDs that will work bears.
  • We begin our Testing and Assessment and Puppy Field Programs during the pups' 7th week; this continues until their 10th week.  This provides us with the information we need to evaluate each pup's natural personality and skills.  We then match pups with owner personalities and needs.  This Program has nearly a 100% success rate for nearly 100 pups!  The goal is to match owners with pups to create unusually communicative, intuitive, effective and rich, lifetime partnerships.
  • During the Testing and Assessment Program, pups are also started on basic field commands.  We will have completed our Socialization, Confidence Building, Testing and Assessment, and Puppy Field Programs by that time.  Results of work during the above periods will have been documented daily.  We will have made our assessments and decided which pups go to which owners by this time.  Pups are ready to go to their owners at that time.
  • During the pup's 10th and 11th weeks, we will schedule all new owners to come and pick up their pups.  New owners travel to the Home Kennel to spend a minimum of 2 nights and days working with Carrie to bond with their pup, learn what it knows and how to work with it before taking it home.  Only one owners is schedule at a time...owners can come with their families.  This is a time to learn what the owners will need to know for the pup's first 6 months of training and training techniques for the rest of its life.  It is also the time to transfer the bond of trust, confidence and love for humans that we have created in our pups, to the new owner...and the transition is made easily here at the Home Kennel.  From this time to the end of the pup's days, we remain responsible with the new owners for the well-being of the pup.  For the lifetime of the pup, we work with the KBD and its owner when questions arise, to help with training and to ensure that the Partnership is healthy, happy and loving.

In November we conduct the Puppy Program that works to socialize, build confidence, and to test, assess and match puppies with owners. New owner orientation and placement will occur during Mid-to late January. New owners come to the Institute for 3 days of orientation and training before they take their new KBD partner home.

To begin the process of becoming a Wind River KBD Puppy Owner, please review the Overview and complete the Owner Application Process below.

2008 Puppy Litter Event Schedule:
We are now accepting applications for Screening and Adoption of Wind River Karelian Bear Dog Puppies.

List of anticipated events and tentative dates:

  • The puppies were born on November 12, 2008.
  • WRBI's unique Socialization Program to adult strangers begins during the pups' 2nd week; socialization to children begins during the 3 rd week – this Program is continued by the new owners after the pups leave the Home Kennel. • We begin our Testing and Assessment and Puppy Field Programs during the pups' 7th week (Dec. 25 – Jan. 4); this continues until their 10th week (Jan. 10-20, 2009).

  • During the pup's 10th and 11th weeks (until we know when the pups are born, this will be sometime between Jan. 10-31, 2009), we will schedule all new owners to come and pick up their pups. New owners travel to the Home Kennel to spend a minimum of 2 nights and 2 days working with Carrie to bond with their pup, learn what it knows and how to work with it before taking it home. Only one owner is scheduled at a time…owners can come with their families. This is a time to learn what the owners will need to know for the pup's first 6 months of training and training techniques for the rest of its life. From this time to the end of the pup's days, we remain responsible with the new owners for the well-being of the pup. For the lifetime of the pup, we work with the KBD and its owner when questions arise, to help with training and to ensure that the Partnership is healthy, happy, and loving.

We ask that new owners have purchased and reviewed the following before arriving to work with their pups: WRBI Field Commands, Ian Dunbar's “Sirius Puppy Training” Video—best viewed by whole family so that family is on board with how to train pup, and the book “The Art of Raising A Puppy” By the Monks of New Skete.
