2007 Puppy Litter Event Schedule:
Wind River McCaw's “Kaila”, bred to Erauspojan Kuujoki, “Yoki”
This litter combines our two lines of world famous Karelian Bear Dogs.
Kaila is the daughter of Eilu, born in Finland, and Blaze, son of Cassie and Rio (founding female and male of the Wind River Karelian Bear Dogs). Yoki is also from Finland.
List of anticipated events and tentative dates:
- Breeding occurred February 16-19, 2007. Gestation is 62 days + /– 5 days. The pups were born on April 20-21, 2007.
- WRBI's unique Socialization Program to adult strangers begins during the pups' 2 nd week; socialization to children begins during the 3 rd week – this Program is continued by the new owners after the pups leave the Home Kennel. The results of this Program have a time-proven success, with WRBI KBDs visiting with thousands of people and kids during hundreds of presentations at schools and other functions, without any problems with confidence or socialization.
- WRBI's unique Confidence Building Program begins during the pups' 1 st week and continues through their 10 th week. The techniques are learned and carried on by the new owners for the duration of the dog's life. Pups are handled for a minimum of 1-2 hours daily during the first 7 weeks of their lives. This Program has provided WRBI with bold, confident, gentle KBDs that function well in almost any type of situation without any concern, and a higher than average success rate for KBDs that will work bears.
- We begin our Testing and Assessment and Puppy Field Programs during the pups' 7 th & 8 th week (June 8-22); this continues until their 10 th week (June 30-July 6). This provides us with the information we need to evaluate each pup's natural personality and skills. We then match pups with owner personalities and needs. This Program has nearly a 100% success rate for over 80+ pups! The goal is to match owners with pups to create unusually communicative, intuitive, effective and rich, lifetime partnerships.
- During the Testing and Assessment Program, pups are also started on basic field commands. The pups will be in their 10 th week (June 30-July 7). We will have completed our Socialization, Confidence Building, Testing and Assessment , and Puppy Field Programs by that time. Results of work during the above periods will have been documented daily. We will have made our assessments and decided which pups go to which owners by this time. Pups are ready to go to their owners at that time.
- During the pup's 10 th and 11 th weeks (June 30-July 14), we will schedule all new owners to come and pick up their pups. New owners travel to the Home Kennel to spend a minimum of 2 nights and 2 days working with Carrie to bond with their pup, learn what it knows and how to work with it before taking it home. Only one owner is scheduled at a time…owners can come with their families. This is a time to learn what the owners will need to know for the pup's first 6 months of training and training techniques for the rest of its life. It is also the time to transfer the bond of trust, confidence and love for humans that we have created in our pups, to the new owner…and the transition is made easily here at the Home Kennel. From this time to the end of the pup's days, we remain responsible with the new owners for the well-being of the pup. For the lifetime of the pup, we work with the KBD and its owner when questions arise, to help with training and to ensure that the Partnership is healthy, happy, and loving.
We ask that new owners have purchased and reviewed the following before arriving to work with their pups: WRBI Field Commands, Ian Dunbar's “Sirius Puppy Training” Video—best viewed by whole family so that family is on board with how to train pup, and the book “The Art of Raising A Puppy” By the Monks of New Skete.
