This
program teaches bears and people to coexist by using highly trained
and carefully selected Karelian Bear
Dogs and a teaching method Hunt calls Bear Shepherding.
Bear Shepherding efforts focus on teaching bears correct behaviors
using positive reinforcement and aversive
conditioning tools, such as red pepper spray, rubber bullets,
Karelian Bear Dogs, and "on-site releases." These materials,
tools, dog training, and techniques were developed and first used
by Hunt and WRBI.
The
Institute is developing courses and a certification process that
teach Bear Shepherding to interested agencies and people
living in bear
country.
